When it comes to choosing an ID Camera, there are is more to consider than you might think. For example, the volume of photos that you need to take, the quality you require, and your budget are all factors you need to weight.

If you are doing a large volume of photos or you have times when people are lined up waiting to have their photos taken, there are ID Cameras with features that help this process become more manageable and efficient. Look for features like pan, tilt, and zoom, as these functions will help speed the photo process greatly, just by using a few arrow keys. You can even get on-board automatic face cropping feature, making the photo immediately viewable on your computer screen, saving time in editing and retakes.  Setting to “instant framing” will center your subject so the photo is ready to be used in the photo ID and you can move on to making the next card/badge.

The quality of the photo is greatly affected by where the photo is being taken. An ideal location is a room with no windows, as outside light can dramatically change the quality of the photo depending on the time of day. Weather can have an impact to, presenting a different light challenge if it is sunny or cloudy. To offset the effects of outside lighting  on your inside photo-taking, where windows might be present, it is strongly recommended to use a camera with a strobe/flash. If you can afford a camera with a strobe/flash, it is the best option to offset outside light.

If you are on a tight budget and can only afford a web cam ( lowest cost option ) try using a desk lamp that you can point at the subject to offset the outside light, or blocking completely the light coming in any windows. Consider upgrading as you can to the type of ID Camera that will help alleviate the biggest challenge you have in your own setting.
